When you’re looking for student accommodation the first thing to remember is to begin your search in due time. We recommend that you begin at least 6 months before actually going abroad to study. Finding student accommodation is therefore quite difficult sometimes – especially if you’re looking for a room or an apartment in the summertime (before the start of the new school year).

Ways to find student accommodation
There are several ways to find housing. First of all, a good way is to ask the housing office of your own university and the international office of your destination university (if you’re going on a student exchange). Often, the universities have a range of student accommodation offers to sublet to students. Secondly, it is a good idea to use your network of friends, family and fellow students – sometimes they know someone, who knows someone…
Alternatively, there are hundreds of other websites out there that offer student accommodation. Try to search on Google or other search engines to get an overlook. Please note, that many housing agencies and property management companies want a fee in order to sublet housing to you – and make sure you read any lease contracts carefully before you sign anything.
When you have successfully found a place to stay, make sure everything is written down in a lease contract: monthly rent cost, terms of cancelling the lease, other monthly costs (such as heating, electricity, water, etc.). Unfortunately, many students forget this and end up paying too much every month. Finally, when everything is signed: enjoy your stay!
CasaSwap.com is an international online marketplace for student accommodation, where people can rent, sublet and swap rooms, apartments and housing all over the world. The website was launched in 2004 and has been supported by the European Commission. It’s free to sign up!
